PIPELINE |
| Pipeline |
PipelineBIND is focused on developing therapeutic targeted nanoparticles to capitalize on the enormous opportunity to improve on currently marketed drugs or enable the delivery of novel classes of therapeutics. Our proprietary pipeline is focused on improving the efficacy and expanding the applicability of existing drugs. We anticipate our first product entering the clinic in 2010. BIND’s technology can be used to deliver a broad range of payloads including emerging therapeutic modalities such as RNAi, allowing us to address multiple therapeutic areas and indications. We will leverage the reach and capabilities of strategic partners to accelerate the development of our pipeline. Our initial development efforts are in the therapeutic areas of cancer and cardiovascular disease, and BIND is also pursuing indications in inflammatory disease: Cancer Cancer is a group of diseases driven by abnormalities in fundamental cell processes and characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. In the U.S., cancer is the second leading cause of death, with 550,000 deaths and 1,400,000 new cases expected annually according to the American Cancer Society. New drug approvals are slow, and the mainstay of treatment remains older chemotherapy agents, many of which are associated with significant side effects. Our ability to dramatically improve on efficacy and side effect profiles of existing chemotherapeutic agents represents an enormous opportunity for BIND’s targeted nanoparticle technology platform. Cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular disease constitutes the leading cause of death in the U.S. According to the American Heart Association, approximately 870,000 lives are lost annually due to cardiovascular disease. An estimated 58 million Americans suffer from cardiovascular disease and the cost of this disease in the U.S. is estimated at over $300 billion per year. BIND has the opportunity to develop new targeted nanoparticle therapeutics that will deliver drugs directly to the site of cardiovascular disease. Inflammatory disease Inflammatory disease affects an estimated 90 million people worldwide, and includes diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and systemic lupus erythematosis. The market for drugs treating diseases where inflammation is a primary component exceeds $40 billion worldwide. With an ongoing need for improved agents to treat inflammation, this sector is seeing dramatic growth. BIND has initiated discovery programs focused on the application of its targeted nanoparticle technology to both localized and systemic anti-inflammatory therapies.
